Recently the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics issued an Occupational Outlook Handbook that analyzes the yoga teaching profession, along with general prospects for Fitness Workers (which is how the government classifies yoga teachers).
The highlights of the report are: Many fitness and personal training jobs are part time, but many workers increase their hours by working at several different facilities or at clients’ homes. Regarding training and certification for yoga teachers, the report noted that:“Training for yoga instructors is changing. Because interest in these forms of exercise has exploded in recent years, the demand for teachers has grown faster than the ability to train them properly. However, because inexperienced teachers have contributed to student injuries, there has been a push toward more standardized, rigorous requirements for teacher training.” This is why students should take a certified yoga teacher training program like the Yoga Alliance program 200 hour program.
The job growth for yoga teachers is good, with a 27 percent growth rate anticipated, much faster than most occupations. The report observed “participation in yoga is expected to continue to increase, driven partly by the aging population that demands low-impact forms of exercise and seeks relief from arthritis and other ailments.”
